5 Tips for Preparing for Your Dermal Filler Treatment

Are you getting ready to schedule your first dermal filler treatment

Dermal fillers are a safe and effective choice for combating wrinkles, adding volume to the face, and plumping up the lips. Over 1 million Americans choose dermal fillers on an annual basis to enhance their natural beauty and fight aging.

If you’re nervous about your first session, our experts at New Age Aesthetics & Wellness are here to share their five tips on getting optimal results with minimal side effects.

1. Discuss your cosmetic goals with your provider

What bothers you the most about your appearance?

Depending on how you answer this question, your provider may recommend a dermal filler with a granular texture or a dermal filler with a soft, gel-like texture.

If loss of volume in the face is your primary concern, your provider may recommend a dermal filler with a granular texture. However, for fine lines and wrinkles, dermal fillers with a soft texture may work best.

2. Schedule a pre-treatment consultation

You can avoid side effects such as bruising by having a conversation with our staff about the medications you’re currently taking.

For example, NSAID medications (e.g., ibuprofen and naproxen) and supplements such as fish oil and ginseng can increase your chances of bruising. Consider scheduling your pre-treatment consultation at least one week before your dermal filler treatment, so your body has enough time to eliminate the substances that promote bruising.

3. Avoid certain creams and facial treatments

Some exfoliants work well for boosting collagen production. However, when you have scheduled a treatment that involves injectables, you may want to stop using topicals at least two days prior to the treatment. Retinol, alpha hydroxy acid, and beta hydroxy acid may increase your chances of experiencing redness and irritation post-treatment because of their exfoliating properties.

4. Skip the cocktails and the wine

Alcohol consumption increases your risk of bruising. For best results, quit consuming alcohol for at least 24 hours prior to your dermal filler treatment.

5. Bring an ice pack with you

If you do experience bruising or swelling, you want to be ready. Pack cold towels soaked in water and ice packs in a cooler bag, so you can address the swelling right away.
