6 Reasons You Have Wrinkles

Aging can cause us to feel helpless when it comes to our skin. However, the passing of time isn’t the only cause of a dull complexion. Many factors for premature aging are within your control. 

To help you out, we asked our expert at New Age Aesthetics & Wellness, Dr. Jonathan Bernardini, about the main causes of wrinkles and how you can lower your risk of premature aging.

1. Smoking 

Nicotine causes narrowing of the blood vessels throughout the body, which makes it harder for nutrients to be carried where they’re most needed. As a result, smokers develop wrinkles and fine lines earlier than the average person does, and they have a harder time recovering from injuries.

2. Sun exposure 

Currently, the sun is suspected of causing most signs of aging, including wrinkles, sagging, and hyperpigmentation. 

Sun exposure can cause a lot of the photodamage to your skin, but this damage seems to occur at an accelerated rate when there are low levels of omega-3 fatty acids in the diet. So along with avoiding tanning beds and going outside during peak hours, increasing your omega-3 intake may also help. 

3. Dehydration 

Dehydration can indirectly cause wrinkles by making fine lines appear more pronounced. Coffee, alcohol, and teas containing caffeine can also dehydrate the skin, even if you drink your daily recommended dose of water.

4. Certain medications 

Many medications either cause fat loss in the face or make you more sensitive to the sun, increasing your chances of developing wrinkles. 

Topical retinoids can increase photosensitivity, so if you’re prescribed a vitamin A cream, make sure you apply it at night, and don’t skip the sunscreen the next day. 

Certain blood pressure medications can also speed up the aging process. 

5. Glycation 

Glycation is the process in which excess sugar is combined with the proteins in your skin, making these proteins rigid and prone to breaking off. Once collagen and elastin are damaged, the skin begins to sag, and fine lines make their appearance.

To avoid premature aging caused by glycation, eat a diet composed of foods with a low glycemic index

6. Less collagen and elasticity as a consequence of aging

Good habits can slow down aging and enhance the beauty of your skin. However, to some extent, everyone develops wrinkles as a consequence of less collagen and elastin in the skin. 

Although ingesting collagen-rich foods may benefit your overall health, there’s no evidence that ingesting collagen powder will increase and strengthen the collagen in your skin. But microneedling and radiofrequency treatments can trick your skin into producing more collagen.
