Do You Have Adult Acne? Here's How We Can Help

Acne isn’t a problem reserved for teenagers. Estimates suggest that about 50 million American adults deal with blackheads, whiteheads, or other markers of acne.

Aside from the cosmetic issues it presents, adult acne can also be an indicator of an underlying hormone imbalance, a chronic inflammatory state, or an endocrine disorder.

If you’ve tried everything, but the zits continue to persist, read on. We asked our expert at New Age Aesthetics & Wellness, Dr. D. Jonathan Bernardini, to explain what causes acne and what treatments are most effective at managing it.

Acne causes

Acne is a chronic, inflammatory skin condition characterized by pimples, whiteheads, blackheads, cysts, and nodules. Although it occurs on the surface of the skin, acne is influenced by internal factors such as hormones and inflammation.

Hormonal imbalances can occur for a number of reasons, including stress, endocrine disruptors, eating disorders, or genetics. Acne can also be a red flag for endocrine disorders such as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and diabetes.

Some women may also experience more breakouts before their menstruation because of fluctuations in hormones. A few days before menstruation, estrogen and progesterone levels drop. This natural fluctuation in hormones can cause your sebum glands to secrete more oil and clog pores.

Inflammation can be triggered by chronic consumption of sugary foods and trans fats (found in margarine and processed baked goods), a high body fat percentage, and cigarette smoking.

Some medications are also known to cause acne, either by raising blood sugar levels or by increasing inflammation levels. These medications include the following:

Some people also develop acne after taking vitamin B12 supplements.

Prevention tips

The drugstore aisle is filled with products that make big promises. However, not everyone responds the same way to certain ingredients. Even products labeled as oil-free or non-comedogenic can cause issues for some.

The best way to find out what works for you and what doesn’t work for you is to keep a journal of how your skin behaves on a daily basis. Removing makeup before bed, changing pillowcases often, and avoiding inflammatory foods can also help.
