Everything You Should Know About Scar Removal

Scars are a natural part of the healing process, but because the composition of scar tissue is different from that of unscarred tissue, scars stand out.

Scars lack elasticity and may have a different pigmentation than normal skin tissue. There are different types of scars, including acne scars, hypertrophic scars, and keloid scars.

Keloid scars are the result of an aggressive healing process. These scars often extend beyond the injury site and are pigmented. Hypertrophic scars resemble keloid scars, as they’re raised and pigmented, but they don’t extend beyond the injury site.

Acne scars occur as a consequence of severe acne and leave indentations in the skin. Acne scars shouldn’t be confused with hyperpigmentation, which occurs when a pimple heals, but leaves a red or dark spot behind.

To help you get a better understanding of how scars are treated, we asked our specialist at New Age Aesthetics & Wellness, Dr. D. Jonathan Bernardini, to explain the treatments he offers to his patients in Parker, Colorado, and the surrounding areas.

Dermabrasion is a treatment that makes use of exfoliation to remove the top layer of the skin and reveal the healthy tissue underneath. Dr. Bernardini uses dermabrasion to remove surface scars and make deep scars appear less noticeable.

Chemical peels

Chemicals peels involve the use of chemical solutions that remove the top layers of the skin, and they can reduce or eliminate scarring. Peels are often used in the treatment of acne scars and hyperpigmentation.

Steroid injections can be used to soften and shrink hard scars such as keloids and hypertrophic scars. After injections, some scars may lose their pigment as well.

Laser treatment

Laser treatments can reduce the appearance of acne scars, injury scars, and surgery scars by stimulating the production of new skin cells. When the skin absorbs the laser energy, the body stimulates the production of collagen and elastin.

Surgical removal

Dr. Bernadini can also remove larger scars by using minor surgical techniques. Surgery is used for keloid and hypertrophic scars that don’t respond well to steroid injections.
